If you're not alterhuman yourself, the basics of what you need to know are as follows: being alterhuman (also known as being 'kin) is sincerely identifying as something else. Alterhumanity has been around since the 70s, with origins in Pagan beliefs.

If you have previously heard of "kinnies" who do this sort of thing for fun, or use "kin" as a synonym for "character I relate to", then know that these people are misinformed.

I first awakened in May of 2018, due to me seeking out answers for my strong connection to and frequent vivid dreams about Chara from Undertale. Since then, I have been very active in the community, and I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on the subject.

My origins are a mix of psychological and spiritual factors. I believe in the multiverse theory, reincarnation, and that my kintypes are my past lives. However, indulging in and caring about said past lives also helps me cope, and helps stabilize my sense of self, which is wavery due to my BPD symptoms. My being autistic influences all of this in some way, though I am not sure exactly how.

I experience a few different types of shifts. Most common for me are mental shifts – that is, entering the mindset of a kintype. As implied by my awakening as Chara, I also experience vivid dream shifts, which is often how I remember details about my past lives. Finally, I occasionally get phantom shifts, where I experience sensations in a part of my body that does not exist.
